When Will You Realize That You Are Enough?

It must be sad to know that the world we live in today are constantly asking for more. More of this and more of that, we have been made to believe that more is better. It could be true, but only until a certain extent. When it passes that point, more ISN'T necessarily better anymore.

It's just like a bell curve. When things are moving against the gradient, it seems like the quality is getting better. Yet, at one point, it reaches its peak and anything more will be considered "junk". What happens then? You got it, the quality starts to decrease.

It's just like our life, no?

We tend to be the hardest worker in the company, we start to get praises. Until one day, we can no longer handle that much workload anymore. We refuse to surrender however. We say to ourselves, "You can definitely push through this. It is coming to an end soon. Just push through this." We made it. We pushed through, survived another day at work. The situation gets worse, we start to notice that the workload is no small thing anymore, we start to get a little bit overwhelmed. We think we are the one to be blamed when we can't manage to get the job done, we hate ourselves and we see ourselves as inferior.

What if the problem is never on us, but the fact that it is just too much to handle? Not enough people talk about this. Just because you can shoulder that much responsibility, it doesn't mean you should or  you must. We all have our own life after all. Why are we comparing ourselves to others? Why are we allowing others to dictate our life? Why are we giving consent to others to attack our inner fort?

Epictetus says it best in his book Discourses, "Philosophy does not promise to secure anything external for man, otherwise it would be admitting something that lies beyond its proper subject-matter. For as the material of the carpenter is wood, and that of statuary bronze, so the subject-matter of the art of living is each person's own life."

We are the master, painter and artist of our own life. Realize that and you will realize what you have accomplished thus far is enough.
